Matthews & English Furniture Makers are an independent workshop based close to the beautiful cathedral city of Durham.
Our aim is to provide you with personally made hand crafted solid wood furniture which is distinctive and individual in appearance and design. Our furniture is craftsmen made to the highest standard using traditional wood working methods, therefore made to be admired for generations.
Our handmade furniture range currently includes, side/lamp tables, console/hall tables, sofa tables, and coffee tables which are all available in the three designs as shown below:- 'Cathedral', 'Dunelm' and 'Whitworth'. We also have dining chair, dining table and sideboard available in the 'Cathedral' design.

All pieces can be made to order using popular hardwoods such as oak, ash, maple, walnut cherry, sapele, sycamore etc. You can also choose from our SPECIAL OFFER selection that are available right now.
Distinctive features of our furniture include, drawer fronts which are formed from the front rail, this allows the grain pattern to continue right across the rail, a highly skilled method not widely used today. A classic stopped chamfer detail is formed on the legs, the chamfer and also the centre of the table top can be skilfully inlaid with a wood type that contrasts or compliments the wood chosen for the piece. The distinctive leg design of the 'Whitworth' is another individual feature of our handmade solid wood furniture.
As every piece is individually made to order, they can be made with or without inlays, also if the sizes listed do not meet your requirements we are able to make to your own measurements. Please call us to discuss your personal preferences regarding design features and dimensions.
Once an order is placed, it will be the responsibility of a single craftsman throughout construction from selection of timber though to completion, this ensures a consistency of high quality and pride of workmanship.
Two main wood working joints are used by the maker; traditional mortice and tenon joints for the frames and of course dovetail joints for the drawers.
All timber used for our solid wood furniture comes from reputable suppliers using sustainable sources. All our furniture is given a clear lacquered finish to protect and enhance the outstanding beauty of the timber. Our personal approach extends to delivering the furniture ourselves to ensure no damage is caused during transportation.
The examples shown on the following pages are 'Cathedral' design constructed from oak, with chamfers and table tops inlaid with maple. Please call us for prices regarding using other wood types.
